- UL 508A panel shop certification — indicates their panel builds meet recognized electrical safety standards.
- CSIA membership — the Control System Integrators Association audits member firms against defined engineering, project management, and business practices. It’s one of the few third-party checks available in this industry.
- Manufacturer partner status — official certified partner status with Rockwell, Siemens, or other platform vendors, not just “we’ve used their software.”
4. A real project management process
Ask how they handle:
- Scope changes mid-project
- Testing and factory acceptance before installation
- Documentation handoff (as-built drawings, logic documentation, HMI screens)
- Response time commitments for post-commissioning support
If the answer is vague, expect the project execution to be vague too.
5. Insurance, bonding, and business stability
For safety-critical work, confirm the integrator carries adequate general liability insurance and, for larger projects, appropriate bonding. Ask how long they’ve been in business and whether they can provide references from clients with projects of comparable size, completed in the last two to three years.
6. Support after commissioning
The project doesn’t end at startup. Ask:
- What does ongoing support look like — response times, availability (24/7 or business hours only)?
- Do they offer a service agreement, or is every future call treated as a new project?
- Will the engineers who built the system be available if something goes wrong six months later?
7. Communication style, from the first call
This one’s less checklist and more instinct: does the integrator ask detailed questions about your process, your constraints, and your existing systems — or do they jump straight to a generic proposal? The quality of the discovery conversation is often a preview of the quality of the engineering that follows.

- Reluctance to name specific past projects or provide references
- No documented certifications, or certifications they can’t verify
- Pressure to sign quickly without a proper site assessment
- Proposals that don’t specify platforms, scope, or testing procedures in writing
